The Nickel & Dime Drive

This peaceful, scenic route creates a loop between the current capital of Virginia and the colonial capital, which is about a 3.5-hour ride if you’re going round trip. You’ll take Richmond to Williamsburg down Route 5, also called the Nickel Road. On your journey, you’ll ride past the homes of three former presidents. Not to mention, you’ll also pass over two dozen civil war sites along the way. At the end of Route 5, there are plenty of places to shop and eat.

If you’re an avid birdwatcher, be on the lookout for bald eagles on this route. When you reach Williamsburg, you’ll head south on Route 31 through Jamestown then travel across the James River. This road will connect you to Route 10, which is also called the Dime Road. About halfway through the route, you’ll find several establishments for shopping and eating. Continue traveling west to head back to Richmond.

U.S Route 250

If you’re looking for a challenging ride through varied terrain, check out U.S. Route 250 from Staunton to Monterey. If you want a longer ride, you can take it to Elkins in WV.  Either way, you’ll want to get an early start, especially if you plan to stop at all the points of interest along the way. As you leave Staunton, you’ll ride through the Shenandoah Valley into George Washington National Park, which will provide breathtaking views. If you’re taking the shorter route, you can complete this ride in about an hour. However, those who plan to stop and admire the scenery will take closer to two hours. After you get through the mountains, you’ll reach Monterey, which is often referred to as one of the most rider-friendly towns in the area.

For those who want to ride a bit further, continue on U.S. Route 250 until you hit West Virginia, where you’ll have the pleasure of riding through the Monongahela National Forest. You’ll find various picnic areas, hiking trails, scenic overlooks and more. You’ll ride through a stretch of small towns until you hit Elkins and probably a bit more traffic as well.
